Scripps Howard Foundation: Journalism

The Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program is looking for fall interns and a post-graduate multimedia fellow. Fall program dates are Sept. 10 to Dec. 14. 

Fall Semester in Washington - application deadline is March 15. 

Undergraduate students, juniors and seniors, will spend a 14-week semester covering politics and other news and feature stories in the nation's capital for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire. Interns may also report for hometown news organizations or other news outlets. This is a full-time internship located in downtown Washington.

Student Press Law Center: Journalism (graduating seniors)

Thanks to a generous grant from the McCormick Foundation, the Student Press Law Center is seeking applicants for a 13-month fellowship position for a recent college graduate with experience in editing, news writing and design for both print and Web-based publications. The position will begin July 16, 2012 and run through Aug. 16, 2013. (Precise start and end dates can be adjusted to accommodate minor scheduling conflicts.)

The full-time position will include health and dental insurance and public transportation benefits and will pay a salary equivalent to $37,000 for the 13-month fellowship.

Applicants with a journalism degree will be given preference, but those with extensive writing and editing experience with student or commercial news media will be considered as well. The position may be especially appropriate for someone who is considering entering graduate or law school in fall 2013.

Duties of the McCormick Publications Fellow at the SPLC will include:

  • Serving as managing editor of the SPLC's thrice-yearly magazine, the SPLC Report, and the News Flash section of the SPLC's website. The McCormick Publications Fellow will help develop the editorial focus of our publications, including writing news stories and coordinating and editing stories written by SPLC journalism interns. Applicants should have significant experience both in reporting/news writing and in editing and directing the work of other reporters. An understanding of basic legal concepts and terminology is helpful.
  • Maintaining and updating the SPLC website. The McCormick Publications Fellow will be responsible for updating the site's news content and helping us come up with ideas for new and relevant content of all types. Must be comfortable with online technology and content management systems. Experience in online journalism and basic working knowledge of HTML a must.
  • Designing the SPLC Report and other SPLC publications. Applicants should have design/layout experience and should have experience using a desktop publishing program (Adobe InDesign preferred) and related applications such as Photoshop.
  • Assisting the executive director in selecting SPLC journalism interns. The McCormick Publications Fellow will perform initial reviews of intern applications, interview top candidates and make hiring recommendations to the executive director.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in journalism or mass communications (or extensive news writing and editing experience with student or professional media if the degree is in another area); will be well-organized, detail-oriented, hard working and efficient, with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to the principles of press freedom; and will have a sense of humor and be comfortable working in an informal but professional environment. Applicants must be willing to commit to serving the full 13-month fellowship. The McCormick Publications Fellow will work closely with all of the SPLC staff members but will be directly supervised by the Center's executive director.

The Student Press Law Center is a 38-year-old nonprofit organization devoted to protecting the free press rights of high school and college journalists. The SPLC resides in a suite of smoke-free offices near the Rosslyn Metrorail station in Arlington, Va., across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., with a view of the U.S. Capitol.

Systems Teaching Institute: Journalism


University Affiliated Research Center Outreach

This internship offers students interested in writing about science topics the opportunity to further develop their writing, interviewing, and research skills to write content for the UARC's social networking, outreach, and communication activities. The intern will work directly with UARC and NASA Ames research staff, conducting researcher interviews both in-person and via email, and cover research topics in the areas of Air Traffic Management / Aeronautics, Earth Science and Remote Sensing, Space Science, and Intelligent Systems disciplines.

Eligibility:
To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time in a Master's or Doctoral program. Students must demonstrate their potential to contribute to Ames research via enrollment in a highly relevant degree program (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) and/or articulation of:
* Acquired skills that might be of special interest
* Prior educational background that shows interdisciplinary knowledge
* Specialized career goals directly related to NASA's mission

Duties:
The intern will be engaged in a wide range of writing activities primarily focused on writing content for the UARC's Blog, Twitter, and Facebook presence. The intern will also support development of an editorial calendar and be responsible for delivering a set number of tweets, blog posts, and Facebook posts on a weekly basis. The intern will write longer form stories in support of the UARC's Frontiers of Science video series as well as provide research support for story development. Additional opportunities to support video development in the form of research and script writing will also be available. 

Skills:
The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

* Strong writing skills
* Strong research skills for developing stories
* A natural curiosity for science and technology
* Knowledge of word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Apple Pages
* Be a self-starter as well as be able to take direction

Each candidate will be required to submit a minimum of three writing samples.

What you'll learn - During the course of this internship, the intern will gain real-life experience in developing editorial calendars, writing for deadlines, interviewing researchers and other scientists, developing and implementing social networking initiatives, all while developing a body of work suitable for their portfolio.

Wick Communications Company: News-Editorial 

Wick Communications Company oversees includes more than 32 community newspapers in 13 states employing 650 people. Its internship program will begin in the summer of 2012. Internships will be available for newsroom positions. These will include reporters, photographers, and/ or graphic/page designers.

All internships will be paid and the intern will be expected to be a contributing member of the newsroom staff. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain hands on experience covering the local community. Mentors will be assigned to each intern. The mentor will coach the intern through on the job training and the practical application of their academic training.

Wick will have a limited number of internships available for the summer of 2012. The location of each is to be determined by the Wick Internship Committee. The internship will be for up to 10 weeks based on the availability of the intern.  Interns will be paid $9.00 per hour ($360 per week) and overtime. The interns will not qualify for benefits due to their short tenure.  A travel allowance of up to $400 will be provided to and from the location of the internship if necessary. The Company is not responsible for an intern's personal vehicle and or personal vehicle expenses. A living expense allowance of $500 per month will be provided if necessary. This will be limited to three months and prorated as necessary.

Cisco: Internal Communications

Intern will have an opportunity to be involved many aspects of communications strategy/development, implementation and program support for Cisco's corporate Global Internal Communications team. Support Employee and Leadership Communications with metrics reporting and analytics, content-development projects, event management and web work.

  • Capture Intranet (CEC Global Homepage) story/page traffic on a monthly basis and provide the team with story ranking for the month based on hits (using Clickstream).

iXsystems Marketing Assistant

The Marketing Assistant will have excellent writing skills and moderate graphic design experience. The ideal candidate is both creative and hardworking with the ability to develop innovative ideas for ads and print related to open source servers and software. Applicants will need to be able to work three days a week from 10 am – 6pm. The Marketing Assistant will report to and complete tasks requested by the Marketing Director; as well as work closely with the webmaster and product manager.

Duties

Writing: Proficient writing skills are a must! The position requires the writing of advertisements, collateral data sheets, press releases, and website content. Much of this writing requires the ability to learn and understand the selling points of open source hardware and software. Graphic Design: Most graphic design projects will have to do with web optimization and Q and A of the iXsystems website; other projects include helping design ad templates. Basic Photoshop skills are required, but additional skills are always a plus! Communication: The position entails a significant amount of communication through e-mail and phone (mostly e-mail). Good communication skills are a must, as ideas need to be conveyed appropriately in the conceptualization process. Trade shows: Over the year, iXsystems attends a number of trade shows to demonstrate our open source software and servers. Marketing Assistants will need to be able to attend local shows, as well as help prepare for both local and remote trade shows. The position requires Marketing Assistants to print copy at Kinko's and to package fliers, informative documents, and trade show goodies to ship out to the shows.
