Novelist, columnist
Students in the School of Journalism & Mass Communications have an impressive array of award–winning campus media in which to gain experience and exposure. These include not only a nationally–known student newspaper but also a regularly–scheduled television news broadcast and two student magazines, all of which are available online.
Spartan Daily
The Spartan Daily is the oldest college daily newspaper in California, and one of only six remaining daily student newspapers in the state. While the Daily has been an institution on the SJSU campus since 1934, its online edition now blazes new trails. The student–run Daily, which regularly wins awards at the state, regional and national levels, headlines a program that attracts students from around the country and the world.
Update News
Update News is an award-winning television newscast that is produced and anchored by students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. It has been broadcast regularly for more than three decades, often winning awards as the top newscast in the state. It airs weekly throughout Northern California and is streamed worldwide over the Internet.
Access
SJSU's award–winning Access magazine has been published every semester since the Fall of 1987. Students in JRN 155, Magazine Editing & Production, serve as editors, art directors and photo editors. All of the writing, artwork and photography that appears is done by students. Former Access staff members now work professionally as magazine editors, writers, communication directors, publicity directors, designers, art directors, photographers and advertising personnel.
Shift
The newest entry in JMC's stable of student media is Shift, part of the university's Social Innovation Initiatives. Its goal is to inspire people to contribute time, energy and resources to overcome the challenges that local communities face. It aims to transform community journalism into a catalyst for a new social contract in the neighborhoods it serves.
Dwight, Bentel & Hall Communications
Dwight Bentel Hall Communications—cleverly named for both JMC's founder and the building in which it's located—is a full–service communications agency operated by the best of JMC's advertising and public relations students.
